R&S Landscaping recently presented the grand prize to the winner of its fourth annual Earth Day poster contest: Anika Sharma, a first-grade student at Willard School in Ridgewood, N.J.

The poster depicts a scene with a bees, butterflies, birds, and ladybugs helping to pollinate flowers. As the first-place winner, Anika received a pizza party for his entire class. Thomas Lacy of R&S Landscaping presented the 1st place certificate to Anika at the party. Her first grade class, led by Mrs. Chanod, was one of several Willard School classes to participate.

The contest was launched to inspire creativity and encourage Bergen County students to be more aware of the diversity in their gardens. Open to Bergen County students in first through eighth grades, the theme was Flowers and Pollination.

“We are always very impressed with many of the entries from schools across Bergen County. The kids are talented and their creativity is always surprising! Anika’s poster stood out because it focused on her understanding of pollination and how nature’s creatures work together with plant life; and that was the aim of our topic this year.” said Robert Schucker, president of R&S Landscaping.

Ridgewood Whole Foods Market displayed the posters in their café beginning on Earth Day in April through May. They also provided desert for the class’ pizza party.

Christopher Kearns, another first grade teacher at Willard School said, “More than a few kids stopped me in the hallway to mention they saw ‘A Willard Poster’ at Whole Foods. This contest makes something from school exist outside and makes it real!”
